Why Dynamic Metering systems are an essential asset for the global LNG sector

Alderley’s Mike Shepherd provided his thoughts on dynamic metering systems for the strategically-important global LNG sector in September’s issue of LNG Industry.  With LNG deliveries to Europe increasing significantly over the past 18 months since the curtailment of Russian pipeline gas, the article delivers useful insights into measurement processes for the supply of LNG including an examination of the role of dynamic fiscal metering or ‘flow measurement’.

In the article Mike examines how the value and efficiency of LNG could be maximised through dynamic metering – a direct contrast to the past when LNG measurement has been a constant challenge in the sector and has been historically under-utilised.  In the article, Mike highlights the issue of unquantified hydrocarbon losses during LNG processing – losses that a proper integrated measurement philosophy with its associated automation and control systems can help to quantify and minimise.  Mike also mentions the role of automation and how real-time measurement insights improve efficiency and reduce emissions.

The key point expressed in the article is that dynamic fiscal metering systems provide highly accurate live measurements of LNG flow rates, composition and energy content that ensures proper billing and custody transfer minimising revenue loss and disputes between stakeholders. Wider benefits to the energy industry from dynamic metering are considerable and include accurate measurement, enhanced safety, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and improved asset management.  Enhanced safety benefits are often overlooked.  Through dynamic measurement, LNG operators can detect leaks, abnormal flow conditions and system malfunctions and act quickly to mitigate problems as they arise through early detection.
